It happens every year around this time. Someone brings in a tincture and says it just isn't working the way it used to. We ask a couple of questions and usually land on the same answer: it's been living in the car since April.
Heat Is Harder on CBD Than Most People Realize
CBD and other cannabinoids are pretty stable compounds, but they do degrade when exposed to prolonged heat, light, and air. We're not talking about one warm afternoon — a tincture that bounces between 50 and 110 degrees in your cup holder all week is a different story.
When cannabinoids break down from heat, you lose potency over time. The product won't hurt you, it just won't work as well as it's supposed to. Same goes for gummies left in a hot gym bag, or a bottle of oil sitting in a south-facing window all summer.
The Easiest Storage Rule
Oils and tinctures stay best in a cool, dark spot — a kitchen drawer, a cabinet away from the stove, or your fridge. Most tinctures handle refrigeration just fine, and it extends shelf life considerably. If you're heading out to a trail or a festival, a small insulated bag does the trick.
Gummies are a bit more forgiving but can soften and stick together in the heat. Keep them in a zip bag in the cooler if they're traveling with you. Topicals like creams and roll-ons are stable but still don't love baking in a hot car.
Products That Work Well in Colorado Summer
If you want something with zero storage drama, the Rocky Mountain Soda ($2.50) is the easiest answer. It's canned, cold, Colorado-made, and there's nothing to measure or store. Just grab one on your way out the door.
For post-activity support after a long hike or a day on the water, the Colorado Fresh Nano Amplified CBD Roll-On ($85) is one of the better summer tools we carry. The nano-emulsified formula absorbs faster than traditional topicals — useful when your skin has been working for a few hours and you need it to get where it's going quickly.
And if staying hydrated at altitude is part of your summer challenge, the Nano CBD Hydration Drops ($80) from GoodLeaf Hemp Therapeutics are worth knowing about. They use an alkaline water base designed for fast absorption, paired with lion's mane and other focus-supporting ingredients. Drop them into your water bottle and keep moving.
One More Altitude Note
This one is specific to Colorado and worth keeping in mind: dehydration at altitude slows how your body absorbs fat-soluble compounds, which includes most traditional CBD oils. Staying well-hydrated up here matters not just for how you feel, but for how well your supplements actually work.
If you've been taking the same tincture for a while and feel like it's less effective in summer, check storage first. Then check how much water you're drinking. Those two things solve it most of the time.
We're open Monday through Saturday, 11am–6pm, at 677 E. Eisenhower Blvd. in Loveland. Stop in if you want to talk through your summer routine — we're happy to take a look at what you've got and make sure it's still working for you.
