You've Probably Already Tried It
If you've bought a CBD product in the last year — a tincture, a gummy, a topical — there's a decent chance CBG was already in the formula. It shows up on more labels now than ever, usually listed right alongside CBD. But most people glance past it without knowing what it is or why it's there.
Fair enough. The cannabinoid alphabet soup gets thick. But CBG is worth a second look, because it's genuinely different from CBD in ways that matter for how you feel.
The Mother Cannabinoid
CBG stands for cannabigerol, and it has a nickname in the hemp world: the mother cannabinoid. That's because every other cannabinoid — CBD, THC, CBC, CBN — starts its life as CBG. Early in the plant's growth cycle, CBG is the raw material. As the plant matures, enzymes convert most of that CBG into other cannabinoids. By harvest time, only about 1% of CBG remains in most hemp strains.
That scarcity used to make CBG expensive and hard to find. But hemp breeders — including several right here in Colorado — have developed CBG-rich strains that retain much higher concentrations. That's why you're suddenly seeing it everywhere. The supply caught up with the science.
How It's Different from CBD
CBD is best known for promoting relaxation and easing everyday tension. CBG seems to work a little differently. Early research and plenty of anecdotal feedback suggest CBG may support focus, mental clarity, and a clear-headed sense of calm. Where CBD helps you wind down, CBG might help you dial in.
That's why a lot of newer formulas pair them together. The idea is that CBD and CBG complement each other — one for calm, one for clarity. You get the relaxation without the fog. Several of our customers at The CBD Store have told us they noticed a real difference once they switched to products that include both.
Where You'll Find It on Our Shelves
We carry CBG across several product categories now. If you want to try it in a daily supplement, the CBDfx CBD + CBG Oil Wellness Tincture ($55) is a solid starting point — it uses a 2:1 CBD-to-CBG ratio with curcumin and CoQ10 built in. For mornings specifically, the CBDfx Morning Capsules ($70) combine CBD and CBG with a touch of caffeine and L-tyrosine, so you're getting focus support right out of the gate.
If you're more interested in targeted comfort, the CBG + CBD Sports Muscle & Joint Cream by GoodLeaf ($50) is one of our most popular topicals. It's 3000mg with a cooling eucalyptus base, and the CBG adds something that customers consistently say they can feel compared to CBD-only creams.
Why It Matters for Your Routine
Here's the practical takeaway. If you're already using CBD and you like how it makes you feel, adding CBG to the mix isn't starting over — it's building on what's already working. Think of it as fine-tuning. The same way you might adjust your coffee or your workout based on what your body tells you, swapping to a CBD+CBG product is just another way to dial in your daily wellness.
Next time you're in the shop, ask us about it. We're always happy to walk you through what's on the shelf and help you figure out which format makes sense for how you actually live. That's the whole point of a local shop — you get to ask questions and try things without guessing.
