If you've spent any time looking at sleep products lately, you've probably noticed CBN on the label. It shows up in gummies, tinctures, capsules — sometimes paired with CBD, sometimes with melatonin, sometimes all three together. But what is it, and why does it keep showing up in everything sleep-related?

Where CBN Comes From

CBN — cannabinol — is what happens when THC ages. As the hemp plant dries and the THC breaks down over time through exposure to oxygen and light, it converts into CBN. The result is a compound that doesn't produce the high associated with THC, but it carries its own distinct properties.

For a long time, CBN was kind of an afterthought in hemp research. It showed up in aged plant material and was mostly noted for its sedating quality. That sedating quality is exactly what made it interesting to formulators.

Why It Pairs Well With CBD

On its own, CBN tends to be gently calming. When it's combined with CBD, the two cannabinoids work together in a way that may support the kind of deep, sustained rest that's hard to come by on melatonin alone.

Here's the thing about sleep: a lot of products help you fall asleep. Fewer help you stay asleep. That's the gap CBN seems to fill. We hear from customers who are frustrated with sleep aids that knock them out but leave them wide awake at 3am. When they switch to something with a meaningful CBN dose alongside CBD, that's often where things click.

We carry a few formulas that lean on this combination. The CBDistillery Shhh Gummies – CBN ($65) are built specifically around that pairing — broad-spectrum CBD with a real CBN dose, without a lot of extras. The Koi Complete Nighttime Gummies ($45) add Delta-9 THC to the mix for a fuller effect. And the GoodLeaf CBD + CBG + CBN Tincture – Blueberry ($90) is what we reach for when someone really needs serious support.

CBN vs. Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone your body already makes — it signals that it's time to sleep. It works well for people who struggle to fall asleep, especially with a shifted schedule. But it's short-acting, and for a lot of people it doesn't address the middle-of-the-night waking.

CBN isn't a replacement for melatonin. They do different things. Some formulas combine both, which is why you'll see sleep gummies with melatonin listed alongside CBD and CBN. If your main challenge is falling asleep, melatonin is useful. If it's staying asleep, CBN tends to be more relevant.

How to Figure Out What You Need

CBN is not a sleep drug, and we won't pretend it works the same way for everyone. Your individual response, the dose, and the rest of the formula all matter. Some people find a small amount does everything they need. Others need more, or a different combination.

What we can do is help you narrow it down. We've had a lot of sleep conversations in this shop since 2018, and we're pretty good at asking the right questions to figure out what's actually going on — whether that's trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up groggy from whatever you're currently using.
