What separates the three
All three start the same way. Hemp is extracted, usually with CO2 or ethanol, producing a crude oil containing cannabinoids, terpenes, fats, chlorophyll and plant waxes. Winterising and filtering clean that up. What happens next decides the spectrum.
Stop there and refine gently, and you have full-spectrum: CBD plus CBG, CBC, CBN, trace THC, terpenes and flavonoids, in roughly the ratios the plant produced.
Run it through chromatography to pull out the THC, and you have broad-spectrum. The separation is not surgical. The same process that removes THC generally removes a good deal of the minor cannabinoid and terpene content alongside it, which is why a broad-spectrum COA often shows non-detect across most of the panel, not just THC.
Keep purifying until only CBD remains, crystallize it, and you have isolate: a white powder, 99% or better CBD, no smell and no taste.
The drug test question
This is where spectrum has consequences beyond how a product feels.
Full-spectrum products contain THC. Legally under 0.3% by dry weight, which sounds negligible and is not, in a body, over time. Standard workplace panels screen urine for THC-COOH, a THC metabolite, usually at a 50 nanogram per millilitre cutoff. THC is fat-soluble and accumulates. Daily use of a full-spectrum product at a meaningful dose can put a regular user over that cutoff, and documented cases of exactly this exist.
Broad-spectrum reduces the risk substantially but does not eliminate it, because non-detect on a COA means below the lab's limit of quantitation, not zero.
Isolate is the only category where the risk approaches zero, and only if the COA confirms it and the product was not made on shared equipment. If your job depends on a clean panel, buy isolate and read the certificate. That is the whole answer.
What each one is good for
Full-spectrum suits people with no testing exposure who want everything the plant produced and are willing to accept trace THC to get it. It usually tastes strongly of hemp, because terpenes and chlorophyll taste like something.
Broad-spectrum is the middle option: some plant complexity, far less THC risk. It is what we tend to point people toward when they want more than isolate and cannot afford a positive test.
Isolate suits precise dosing, testing exposure, and anyone who wants no hemp flavor. Because it is pure CBD by weight, the milligram number on the label maps directly to what you are taking, with no other cannabinoids in the mix.
Which ones survive the new rules
The 2025 Hemp Act caps finished products at 0.4 milligrams of total THC per retail container. Container means the innermost retail packaging: the whole bottle, the whole bag, not a serving.
That is a hard number and it is small. A 30 millilitre full-spectrum tincture can carry several milligrams of total THC across the bottle while sitting comfortably under 0.3% by weight. Under a per-container cap, the weight percentage stops mattering and the total mass is what counts. Most full-spectrum tinctures fail it.
Broad-spectrum and isolate products generally clear it, since there is little or no THC to total up. The cap takes effect December 11, 2026, moved from November 12 by H.R. 6500, signed September 2, 2026.
We have stopped reordering the products this affects and are selling through what remains. If you rely on a specific full-spectrum item, the practical window is now.
How to verify what you bought
The label is a claim. The certificate of analysis is evidence.
A full-spectrum COA shows measurable numbers across several cannabinoids and a delta-9 THC figure under the limit. A broad-spectrum COA shows CBD high and THC at non-detect or ND. An isolate COA shows CBD above 99% and essentially nothing else.
If a product says broad-spectrum and the COA shows a real THC number, the label is wrong and it is worth asking why before you take it.
