If you've been looking at CBD sleep products lately, you've probably noticed CBN popping up on labels everywhere. CBD + CBN. CBN gummies. CBN tinctures. It seems like every sleep formula has it now. So what is it, and does it actually do something different?

We get this question a lot at the shop. Here's how we explain it.

CBN Is Not CBD

Both CBD and CBN come from the hemp plant, but they're different compounds. CBD is the primary cannabinoid in most products — it interacts with your endocannabinoid system in a broad, balancing way. CBN is a minor cannabinoid that forms naturally as THC ages and oxidizes. In hemp, there's very little of it by default, which is why it used to be rare to find in meaningful amounts.

The reason CBN keeps showing up in sleep formulas is that early research and a lot of user experience suggests it may support restfulness in a way CBD alone doesn't. It's not a sedative — it's subtler than that. But when you pair it with CBD, people tend to report it's easier to stay asleep, not just fall asleep. That distinction matters a lot for the customers we talk to.

Why August Is a Good Time to Pay Attention to This

August in Colorado has a particular kind of tired built into it. Long summer days, late sunsets, the slow creep of fall schedules back into your life. Your body is starting to want more rest than summer is actually giving you. And that shows up at night — you're physically worn out, but your brain has a hard time letting go.

This is exactly when customers come in saying CBD helped them relax, but they're still waking up at 3am or lying awake longer than they'd like. That's usually when we start talking about CBN.

What We're Reaching For at the Shop

The CBDistillery Shhh Gummies – CBN ($65) are one of the most straightforward CBN options we carry. Broad-spectrum CBD alongside a solid CBN dose — clean formula, nothing extra layered in.

If you'd rather have a capsule, the CBDfx Night Capsules – CBD + CBN ($70) pair 30mg of CBD with 30mg of CBN. That's a meaningful dose of each, and the capsule format absorbs a little more slowly than a gummy — some people find that timing works better for staying asleep through the night.

For something more flexible, the CBDfx Calming Tincture – CBD + CBN ($55) lets you adjust by the dropper. If you're not sure where your dose lands yet, a tincture is usually a good starting point.

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Try It

CBN works best when you give it a few nights. One night doesn't tell you much — consistency is where most people see a difference. And like any supplement, your experience depends on your sleep situation, stress level, and body chemistry. It's not one-size-fits-all.
